About us
The richmanrun Backyard Ultra will be the inaugural event of its kind, held on the beautiful Private Game Farm Die Boer & Die Belg, situated 15km outside of Mookgophong in Limpopo.
The race date is 20 May 2023.
We are situated at 1,141m above sea level. The 6,77km route only has 34m elevation gain, but the thin air, especially in Winter can be quite a lung crusher if you are not used to it.
There is an abundance of wildlife on the farm: our Giraffe couple Bert & Reinhilde, a healthy herd of Eland, Gembsbok, Zebra and Wildebeest to name a few. When night time arrives, you can expect to see a multitude of our nocturnal friends like Porcupine, Aardvark, Bushbuck and Jackal.
The race village can accommodate 40 entrants and a support crew of 3. There is a conveniently located parking area for vehicles, clean maintained ablutions, a swimming pool, braai area and electricity. The vibe will all be about you and your race and we want you to enjoy your experience! Cool tunes, a pop-up bar and some food options will also be available to you and your crew.
The race will be on the same loop day and night, starting at Sunrise.

Who Is Richmanrun
Richmanrun is a dream that was created on the slopes of Table Mountain and is becoming a reality on the foothills of the Waterberg.
We all know the benefits of exercise for our physical, as well as mental well being. I found this through running, particularly trail running 10 years ago.
In a difficult time in my life, I stumbled onto running. First road running and then after injury, I switched to trail running and haven't looked back.
It didn't take me long to get hooked on the feeling trail running offered me. I was able to start dealing with struggles I faced in life, out on the trails.
The more time I spent in nature, I realised how small and insignificant I was, but at the same time realising how important each and every human on this planet is.
How we all have a purpose and ability to be the best versions of ourselves by allowing our body and mind to realise their full potential.
Therefore, enriching yourself on a journey through exercise and seeing what you are capable of, mentally and physically.
This 10-year journey led me to start Richmanrun as an events company, promoting the sport of trail running and endurance events in Limpopo, South Africa.
I hope to make this the first of many annual events and get Sports Tourism going in Limpopo.
What Is Backyard Ultra
A Backyard ultra is a form of ultra-marathon racing where competitors must consecutively run a distance of 6706 meters (4.167 miles) in less than one hour. When each lap is completed, which is termed a "Yard" the remaining time within the hour is typically used to recover for the next hour's race.
Most Backyard Ultras are won with between 20 and 30 yards (hours), with low-key grassroots events generally running from 12-24 hours. The more competitive events, as is well documented, can last for days and athletes can rack up huge mileage.
Did you know the longest distance recorded by a competitor in a backyard ultra event is 101 laps or 677,26 km by Merijn Geerts & Ivo Steyaert at the 2022 Backyard Ultra World Cup Championships in Belgium 2022? There is an annual World Cup where the best 15 ultra runners from each country take part in their respective countries.
The Backyard Ultra concept has grown in popularity since its inception in 2020. It offers athletes a platform where they can set and achieve personal goals while enjoying the social part of the race with the support of their crew. The concept of racing against oneself and finding the mental toughness to step up to the start line for another loop is what makes this concept special.
The Richmanrun Backyard Ultra offers to be a very spectator-friendly event set in a uniquely beautiful environment.
We believe that Die Boer & Die Berg is the ideal location to host the first Backyard Ultra in the beautiful province of Limpopo. The well-maintained trails, venue, and camping ground facilities will allow athletes to come to Test their Limits in a world-class facility.
